Story
A modern-day tale of the pursuit of fortune in the world of West Texas oil rigs. A landman, at least one who works in the oil industry, acts as a middleman between exploration companies and landowners. Typically, a landman’s job is to negotiate and finalize agreements with landowners who hold mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.
As referenced on CBS News Sunday Morning: Episode 4424 (2022)
Essentially, they manage the land and secure leases so they can drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, housing for workers (man camps), assemble excavators, and drill the wells themselves, especially in remote locations. They are also part of the repair team, problem solvers, and facilitators.
Clever witty comebacks are his forte
My review is strictly about the entertainment value of the show and whether it’s a waste of time. It’s clear that Billy Bob Thornton does a great job with a strong supporting cast. So if strong language isn’t your thing, you probably haven’t seen Bad Santa or his other movies for the most part.
For that reason, I can appreciate it
The first two episodes are definitely entertaining, and I love the balance of humor and then the WTF moment out of left field. I’d say it’s a strong enough start to keep you watching. A gritty show that feels almost inappropriate in today’s society, as everyone has to walk on eggshells in what they do or say so as not to offend anyone.
Otherwise, it’s entertaining and not a waste of time
The show does have a bit of sexualization of Thornton’s 17-year-old daughter, but according to research, 17 is the age of consent in Texas, where the show is set, but it’s still a bit odd to me, which is why I didn’t give it a perfect 10. Hopefully the first two episodes set the tone for what’s to come and don’t overshadow where the show starts to fall apart as it progresses.
