Far from it
Story
Nine noble families fight for control of the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after lying dormant for millennia George R.R.’s wife Martin once said he would abandon him if he killed Arya or Sansa Tywin Lannister: A man who has to say “I am king” is not a true king During the opening credits, each cast member’s name is accompanied by signs from his character’s house Appeared in Hollywood’s Top Ten: Critics’ Nominations: Drama (2011) Main Title (uncredited) Written by and starring Ramin Djawadi I gradually started watching Game of Thrones from the first episode (gradually because I was very busy) after hearing nothing but great things about it from friends, family, and IMDb reviewers. And with such a talented cast and a brilliant book series, how could it go wrong? The good news is that Game of Thrones did not go wrong. Not only is it a rare TV series that does justice to its source material and treats it with respect, but it is also one of the best, most compelling and consistently engaging series of recent years in its own right.
Visually, Game of Thrones looks great
A TV series so brilliant that you actually have to check if it was made for TV when everything is done to such a high standard that it puts many films being made today to shame. This is one of the strongest examples of an acclaimed series that deserves every ounce of praise it has received. The scenery is consistently spectacular, the sets are extremely atmospheric and easy on the eyes, with a truly meticulous eye for detail, and the costumes fit the characters perfectly. Then there are the special effects, which are some of the best of any TV show and are not overused or over-used.
Likewise the camera work and editing, which are also cinematic quality
The scope, detail and the way they actually have character and soul is better than many big budget blockbusters. You can’t talk about Game of Thrones without mentioning the multi-layered thematic, orchestral and atmospheric music and the unforgettable main theme. Again, it is worthy of a big budget fantasy/action/drama film. It’s hard not to be blown away by the quality of the writing, because “outstanding” is not an adjective strong enough to describe how good the writing is.
They aren’t too long, nor are any elements out of place
It always has a natural flow, is multi-layered and thought-provoking, and displays a wide range of emotions such as thrilling suspense, touching pathos and witty humor. The storylines are so fast-paced, structured, with so much nuance and attention to coherence, a high emotional level, and touches on complex and delicate topics with intelligence and tact. Whenever there is a scenic or more action-oriented scene, there is always a reason, never for the sake of it. Not only are the set pieces designed with plenty of epic scale, superb staging, suspense and dramatic tension, but behind all that scale and striking attention to detail there is a lot of heart and complexity.
The characters are also a big part of the charm
Game of Thrones has characters that are so well developed and, despite the fact that it’s set in a fantasy world, as close to reality as possible. These characters aren’t archetypal heroes and villains (Joffrey is the only one who comes close; the difference is that he’s an extremely interesting character with a lot of development who ranks well above one hundred percent on the threat level scale), they are much more and have strengths and weaknesses. Decisions are logical and you don’t value a character any less if a decision isn’t the right one because mistakes are recognized and learned from.
