On a deserted beach, amid wind and waves, father and son, Mamargade and Sigaal, enjoy the happiness of nature
Story
The newly formed family faces challenges as they pursue individual goals and face the challenges of modern life, relying on love, trust, and resilience to guide them. Such precious moments are few and far between among the many jobs, drone strikes that bring death from above, checkpoints, and labor payments that take months to materialize, if at all. In their simple and small house made of cinder blocks and corrugated steel, the couple lives with Mamarheida’s sister, Oravilo.
The risks are huge
Seagaal dreams of the world. Oravilo dreams of sewing and selling his own clothes. Being a single woman, she can’t get a loan, so Arauelo comes up with a plan to get around this rule.
“Village next to paradise” first appeared in Cannes
“All my life I have asked to improve the situation,” he said. – says Mamarheid, – but I keep making mistakes.” When misfortune overshadows almost all aspects of everyday life, it is impossible to avoid “mistakes”. Nevertheless, the modest and hardworking trio continues to ask and hope for luck, own business, time at the beach, school funding and better days.
The investment in Somalia paid off in terms of the film’s authenticity
“This is the first film shot on location in Somalia,” said director Mo Haraway, who attended the North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Harave involved the Paradise community in the creation of the film and hired non-professional actors. Surrounding sounds of music on the radio, the movement of cars, waves and wind also contributed to the creation of realistic landscapes.
“Wind is a character,” he said
Harave said: “So that human characters are never lonely.” Culture is also a character, and I enjoyed immersing myself in Somali songs, stories and landscapes.
